Gatehouse and courthouse, Battle Abbey, East Sussex, 1998. Artist: J Bailey
Gatehouse and courthouse, Battle Abbey, East Sussex, 1998. The Great Gatehouse, begun in 1338, which gave access to the outer court, still stands. Adjoining is the courthouse, largely rebuilt in the mid-16th century, where the manorial court sat. The Benedictine abbey of Battle was founded by William the Conqueror on the site of the Battle of Hastings.
