The gatehouse bastion of Walmer Castle, Deal, Kent, 1998. Artist: J Bailey
The gatehouse bastion of Walmer Castle, Deal, Kent, 1998. The gatehouse bastion is seen here, with access across the moat. The royal standard shows that the Queen Mother, Warden of the Cinque Ports, is in residence. Walmer Castle was built in 1539 as part of a chain of artillery forts to guard the south coast. It consists of four semi-circular bastions around a circular central keep.
