The cloister, Battle Abbey, East Sussex, 1998. Artist: J Bailey
The cloister, Battle Abbey, East Sussex, 1998. The vaulting of the monastic cloister can clearly be seen in the west range, which in the middle ages housed the abbot. The Benedictine abbey of Battle was founded by William the Conquorer on the site of the Battle of Hastings. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, part of its buildings were adapted as a country house.
