Detail of the Circus, Bath, Avon, 2000. Artist: JO Davies
Detail of the Circus, Bath, Avon, 2000. John Wood the elder conceived of the Circus in 1725 as part of his grand scheme for the development of Bath. When it was built in 1754-8, it was the first such Circus in England. It is in essence a terrace of houses behind a grand facade which combines three Classical orders of columns, one on each storey, topped by a balustrade.
