Naval battle in Oresund between the Netherlands and Sweden, 1658.
Naval battle in Oresund between the Netherlands and Sweden, 1658. Known as the Battle of the Sound, this was an engagement in the Dutch-Swedish War of 1658-1660. Oresund, the strait that separates Denmark from Sweden was of vital strategic importance for controlling sea trade in the Baltic. The Swedes, having defeated the Danish army, controlled the strait and were blockading Copenhagen. The Dutch, under Jacob van Wassanaer Obdam, defeated the Swedes, commanded by Carl Gustaf Wrangel, ending the blockade. From the Landskrona Museum Collection.
