General Louis Faidherbe in 1870, (1865-1905). Faidherbe (1818-1889) was a soldier and a colonial administrator. While serving in Senegal he created the Senegalese Tirailleurs, a French Army corps recruited from France's colonies in West Africa. In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 he commanded the Army of the North.
