Serge Voronoff, Russian-born French surgeon, 1923.
Serge Voronoff, Russian-born French surgeon, 1923. Voronoff (1866-1951) became famous for his therapeutic technique of grafting of tissue from monkey testicles onto the testicles of humans in the 1920s and 1930s. His treatment gained him considerable wealth, but fell completely out of favour. In the 1990s there was some speculation that his work might have been responsible for the AIDS virus entering the human population. A photograph from Album de Photographies, Dans L'Intimite de Personnages Illustres, 1850-1950, Editions MD, 22 Rue de L'Arcade, Paris 8, 1850-1950.
