The East India House, City of London, late 18th century.Artist: B Green
The East India House, City of London, late 18th century. Founded in 1600, the British East India Company effectively ruled India from 1757 until after the Indian Rebellion of 1857 when the administration of the territory was transferred to the British government. Its headquarters, East India House on Leadenhall Street, was completed in 1729. It was designed by Theodore Jacobsen, a merchant and amateur architect. The building was extended and remodelled in the 1790s.
