Emile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian, French writers, 1887. Erckmann (1822-1899) and Chatrian (1826-1890) both came from Alsace-Lorraine. They wrote together, publishing their works under the name Erckmann-Chatrian. In 1887 their partnership and friendship ended when Chatrian, at the time battling mental illness, wrote to Erckmann informing him that he had been paying ghostwriters out of their royalties.
