King Louis Philippe I of France, c1845-1850.
King Louis Philippe I of France, c1845-1850. Louis Philippe (1773-1850) was proclaimed king in 1830 after the overthrow of the repressive regime of Charles X by the July Revolution. Ruling as 'King of the French' rather than 'of France', he attempted to establish a monarchy more in touch with the people than previously. Louis Philippe's rule was initially popular, but his regime increasingly came to be regarded as conservative and favouring the wealthy. In 1848 the people revolted again and Louis Philippe abdicated and fled to England. His overthrow brought an end to the monarchy in France.
