Jules Cambon, French diplomat, 1911. Cambon served as Governor General of Algeria from 1891 before being appointed Ambassador to the United States in 1897. He was instrumental in the peace negotiations between Spain and the US to bring the Spanish-American War to a conclusion in 1898. Cambon later served as Ambassador to Spain, and to Germany until the outbreak of the First World War, after which he was head of the political section of the French foreign ministry.
