Manuscript illustration from the life of St Denis (died c258 AD), written by Yves. The book depicts the torture and martyrdom of the saint by the Roman governor Fescenninus Sisinnius. The lower part of each scene depicts people on the bridge over the River Seine. On the right is a man with a monkey. From the collection of the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
