Albert I, the third King of the Belgians, visiting the trenches of Avecapelle, Belgium, 1915.
Albert I, King of the Belgians, visiting the trenches of Avecapelle, Belgium, 1915. Albert (1875-1934) was the third king of Belgium, succeeding his uncle, Leopold II, in 1909. After Belgium was invaded by the Germans at the outbreak of World War I, Albert took personal command of her armed forces and received a hero's welcome when he returned to Brussels at the end of the war. He was greatly mourned by his subjects after he was killed in a climbing accident in the Ardennes in 1934.
