At the outbreak of the war, Pau (1848-1932) was recalled from retirement and given command of the Army of Alsace with the objective of recapturing the 'lost provinces' of Alsace and Lorraine from the Germans. Initially successful, Pau was defeated at Morhange-Sarrebourg and his army was disbanded with the troops redeployed to the Sixth Army at the Marne. Pau returned to retirement.
