Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich, English naval officer, (19th century). Montagu (1625-1672) was General at Sea during the Commonwealth period. After the Restoration, he was admiral of the fleet that brought Charles II back from exile in May 1660. Montagu was influential in the career of diarist Samuel Pepys.
