Napoleon III, President of the French Republic and Emperor of France, 1860s. Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (1808- 1873) assumed the title Emperor of France in 1852. Under his rule he gave his country two decades of prosperity under a stable authoritarian government. Napoleon's empire ended with defeat in the Franco-Prussian war in 1871.
