Cizhou stoneware jar with carved peonies, early Northern Song dynasty, China, late 10th-early 11th century. A Cizhou jar of globular shape with a slightly everted mouth rim and flared foot-rim. The grey stoneware body is covered with a white slip which is deeply carved through the slip to the body with peony scrolls. The whole jar is covered with a transparent glaze of yellowish-white tone. The base is unglazed showing the grey body.
