Jade pebble of two mandarin ducks on a bed of waves, late Ming dynasty, China, 1550-1644.
Jade pebble of two mandarin ducks on a bed of waves, late Ming dynasty, China, 1550-1644. A carved black and white jade pebble in the form of a pair of mandarin ducks holding lotus flowers in their mouths on a bed of waves. The waves are rendered in late Ming style with whirlpools. The mandarin duck symbolises marital fidelity and was a popular motif in Chinese art particularly in the late Ming.
