Pottery hu painted with cloud and 'dissolved' dragon design, Western Han dynasty, China, late 2nd century BC. A grey pottery circular hu-shaped jar painted over a black slip with a lacquer type design of clouds and dissolved dragons in white, green, orange and red pigments. The two monster masks holding the ring handles are in solid, deep red clay relief; the horizontal bands and ring handles however are just painted.
