Jean and Noel Robert helping Jacques Charles (1746-1823) to inflate the balloon with hydrogen produced by covering a barrel of iron filings with sulphuric acid. On 1 December 1783 Charles and one of brothers made the first manned ascent in a hydrogen balloon, lifting off from the Tuileries Gardens in Paris.
