Blackish brown chicken-headed ewer with squared lugs, Eastern Jin dynasty, China, 4th century. A large chicken-headed ewer with two square horizontal lugs on the shoulders, covered with dark blackish brown glaze. The square lugs are typical of the period. This type of black chicken-head ewer was a speciality of the Deqing or Yuhang kilns of Zhejiang Province.
