Yue celadon stoneware hu with three black bands, Eastern Han dynasty, China, 1st century. A circular hu-shaped vase of hard reddish buff clay, of traditional shape but with three raised bands on the shoulder, the neck with incised wavy bands and unglazed. It is glazed in the interior and down to the lower band with a deep sea-green iron oxide glaze. The three bands are accentuated with a thick brown suffused black glaze, the two chevron-decorated handles joining the upper two black bands, topped by stylised ram's horn appliques.
