Brown marbleware offering tray, High Tang period, China, 684-756.
Brown marbleware offering tray, High Tang period, China, 684-756. A marbled ware offering tray on three small stubby legs. The clay is of brick and buff colour covered on top and over the rim with a dark yellowish brown glaze; there are three spur marks evident on the top of the tray, which has a narrow flat rim and thickened edge. This piece is marbled throughout and is the earliest form of marbled wares dating to the high Tang. Sherds of similar brown glazed trays were found at Tang dynasty kiln sites at Luoyang.
