Pair of dishes with ducks, Ming dynasty, China, 1550-1599.
Pair of dishes with ducks, Ming dynasty, China, 1550-1599. A pair of blue and white and tomato-red kinrande shallow circular dishes. Each dish is painted in the centre with a pair of mandarin ducks swimming in a pond with a lotus spray all in underglaze blue. The cavetto and rim are decorated differently with a wide band of gold peaches on a tomato-red kinrande type ground with underglaze blue scrolling pendants. The reverse has bird and flower sprays in gold on a white ground. The base has a pseudo seal script mark. Kinrande pieces were made principally for the Japanese market where they were popular from the mid-16th century until the early 17th century.
