Braxton Bragg, American soldier. Bragg (1817-1876) was a general in the Confederate (southern) army during the American Civil War. He commanded the Army of Tennessee to victory at the Battle of Chickamauga (September 1863), but after defeat at Chattanooga two months later he was relieved of field command and re-assigned as military advisor to Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
