Lacquer natsume with stork, Middle Edo period, Japan, 18th century. A natsume (tea jar and cover) in gold maki-e on black lacquer. The lid is decorated with a single stork standing in a pond with marsh leaves overlapping towards the base. The interior has gold sprinkled on a copper background (nashiji). The eye of the stork has inlay of mother of pearl.
