Wooden whale, Qing dynasty, China, 1644-1911. A small yellowish wood root with natural form enhanced to create a large disgruntled-looking whale or fish. Its tail is raised and held like an umbrella over its rear. There is a small circular inset under the lower jaw which is sealed with red lacquer.
