Wooden head of a lohan, Northern Song dynasty, China, 11th century. Head of a disciple of the Buddha, eaten out by termites to a hollow core. The lifelike eyes are made of suitably coloured glass, the neck is somewhat scraggy. There are traces of white pigment.
