Charles Lee, English-born American Revolutionary general. Effectively second-in-command of the Revolutionary forces in the early part of the American War of Independence, Lee (1731-1782) was captured by British troops in 1776, but was released in exchange for the captured British General Prescott. He was relieved of command and court-martialled for disobeying George Washington's orders at the Battle of Monmouth in 1778.
