Steatite hand warmer, Tang dynasty, China, 618-907 AD. A small grey steatite handwarmer of beehive form. The piece is plain except for three stylised trefoil cloud motifs piercing the stone and two narrow bands each consisting of two incised parallel lines on the upper half of the piece bisected by the trefoils. There is a further incised single line which surrounds the base. The plain silver cover is indented with a well in the centre.
