Tsar Alexander II of Russia and his staff, (1900).
Tsar Alexander II of Russia and his staff, (1900). Alexander II (1818-1881) pictured seated, flanked by King Carol I of Romania (left) and Grand Duke Nicholas (right), probably during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. Alexander became Tsar in 1855 at the height of the Crimean War. Known as 'The Liberator' for his emancipation of the serfs in 1861, he was assassinated in St Petersburg by a bomb thrown by a member of a revolutionary group known as People's Will.
