The Stockton & Darlington Railway, 1825 (1900).
The Stockton & Darlington Railway, 1825 (1900). Opened on 27 September, 1825, the Stockton & Darlington Railway (S&DR) was the world's first public railway. It was built to link the collieries in West Durham and Darlington with the docks on River Tees at Stockton, Durham. At the opening of the railway, large crowds saw chief engineer George Stephenson at the controls of 'Locomotion', the locomotive built by Robert Stephenson & Co, as it pulled 36 wagons to the Stockton Terminus.
