John Hunter, 18th century Scottish surgeon, (19th century).Artist: GH Adcock
John Hunter, 18th century Scottish surgeon, (19th century). Hunter (1728-1793) delivered a unique series of lectures on the theory and practice of surgery, which attracted many famous students, including Edward Jenner, Astley Cooper and John Abernethy (who would continue Hunter's methods). Sir Joshua Reynolds and Franz Joseph Haydn were among his friends. After Hunter's death his manuscripts were destroyed but his collections were presented to the Royal College of Surgeons in 1795. Most of this collection was destroyed in an air raid during the Second World War.
