Edward I presenting his infant son to the Welsh, 1284. Edward (1239-1307) reigned from 1272 to 1307, ascending the throne of England after the death of his father, Henry III. He conquered Wales between 1276 and 1284 and oversaw the building of a series of great castles in the conquered territory. In 1301 Edward declared his eldest son, the future King Edward II, Prince of Wales.
