The death of William Rufus, 1100. William II (Rufus) (1056-1100), King of England from 1087, was shot and killed by an arrow while hunting in the New Forest. The third son of William the Conqueror, he was a widely unpopular ruler, leading some historians to theorise that his death was not an accident.
