Barbara Ayrton on the bottom stair of the Votes for Women bus, October 1909.
Barbara Ayrton on the bottom stair of the Votes for Women bus, October 1909. She is wearing the suffragette uniform, and a sash which would have been white purple and green, the suffragette movement's colours. The bus is covered in notices and was driven through the streets of the West End of London. Records of the time state that a trumpeter on the roof would draw attention to the bus, and that they would stop along the way to hand out leaflets. © London Museum/Heritage Images
