'Under the Archs', 1872. Artist: J Huyot
'Under the Archs', 1872, showing tramps sitting up against the wall of the arch. The riverbank slopes away to the water's edge, where people are sleeping in a moored boat. The masts of ships are outlined against the cloudy night sky. Taken from London: A Pilgrimage by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Dor?. A Pilgrimage was a comprehensive portrait of London, but although the book was a commercial success many of the critics disliked it. Several were upset that Jerrold and Dor? had concentrated on the poverty that existed in London. © London Museum/Heritage Images
