'Hudibras Triumphant', 18th century. Artist: William Hogarth
'Hudibras Triumphant', 18th century. The squire Ralph attaches the fiddle to the top of the stocks. Hubidras watches from his horse, with the one legged fiddler tied to him by a length of rope. The scene is watched by a boy with a hoop, and a woman who appears to be comforted by a man next to her. Plate X from the story Hudibras, written by Samuel Butler. Hudibras is a colonel in the Cromwellian army. The story shows him getting involved in various misadventures, where he shows himself to be stupid, greedy and dishonest. © London Museum/Heritage Images
