'Hudibras Catechiz'd', 18th century. Artist: William Hogarth
'Hudibras Catechiz'd', 18th century. A man wearing a devil's mask stands on Hudibras and threatens him with a club. The man in the doorway removes his mask, and turning to the woman entering the room, points to Hudibras. A shorter man dressed as a monster holds a knife and holds a torch that illuminates the room. In the shadows Hudibras' squire Ralph hides behind a curtain. A picture of Cromwell is on the wall. Plate IV from the story Hudibras, written by Samuel Butler. Hudibras is a colonel in the Cromwellian army. The story shows him getting involved in various misadventures, where he shows himself to be stupid, greedy and dishonest. © London Museum/Heritage Images
