'Hudibras in Tribulation', 18th century. Artist: William Hogarth
'Hudibras in Tribulation', 18th century. Hudibras in the stocks, his bare foot poking through one of the holes. He turns his head away in shame as he sees the woman dressed in blalck recognising him and pointing to him. A young boy tickles the foot of Hudibras' squire Ralph, who is the man next to Hudibras in the stocks, with a feather. In the background a young man flirts with a young girl. Plate VI from the story Hudibras, written by Samuel Butler. Hudibras is a colonel in the Cromwellian army. The story shows him getting involved in various misadventures, where he shows himself to be stupid, greedy and dishonest. © London Museum/Heritage Images
