Water engine at Cold Bath Fields Prison, London, 1808. Artist: Augustus Charles Pugin
Water engine at Cold Bath Fields Prison, London, 1808. Built in 1794 on the site of a well of cold water discovered in 1697, the prison was notorious for its severity. In 1820 the Cato Street conspirators were kept at Cold Bath fields for a few day before being moved to the Tower. The prison closed in 1877 and was demolished 12 years later. © London Museum/Heritage Images
