Modern marker for the site of the burial of the embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce, 1274-1329, at Melrose Abbey, or St Mary's Abbey, a Cistercian abbey founded 1136 under King David I of Scotland, in Melrose, Roxburghshire, Borders, Scotland. The heart was found in 1921 below the Chapter House, then rediscovered in 1996 and reburied here in 1998. The abbey was built 1136-96 in Gothic style and was the first Cistercian abbey in Scotland.
