Crowds cheering Queen Victoria at Carlton House, London, (c1842?).
Crowds cheering Queen Victoria at Carlton House, London, (c1842?). Loyal subjects wave their hats as the queen drives to and from her 'Trial' at the House of Lords, Westminster. Three attempts were made on the queen's life between 1840 and 1842; the trial, therefore, was presumably that of one of her assailants during that period, Edward Oxford, John Francis, or John William Bean. Oxford was found to be insane and transferred to a criminal lunatic asylum, Francis received the sentence of 'Transportation for Life, with hard labour', and Bean was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment. © London Museum/Heritage Images
