Ahu or altar of the Marae Oputeina, and Motu, a small island, in the distance, at Taputapuatea, at Te Po, in the Opoa valley, on the island of Raiatea, in the Leeward Islands, Society Islands, French Polynesia. At this temple platform, visitors would say their farewells. Departing chiefs would take a stone from this marae to use elsewhere in a marae which would be called Marae Taputapuatea. This site was a meeting place and sacrificial site for travellers from all over the Pacific. Picture by Manuel Cohen
