Thomas Babington Macaulay, Lord Macaulay's original MS, as sent to the press, of his article discussing The State in its Relations with the Church, by William Ewart Gladstone. Contributed to the Edinburgh Review for April, 1839. The detached signature is from a letter to Professor Macvey Napier, editor of the Edinburgh Review, dated 10th February 1839 in which he praises Gladstone's book and talks about meeting him in Rome. From the third series of Facsimiles of royal, historical, literary and other autographs in the Department of Manuscripts, British Museum: Series I-V, (London, 1899).
