James I, King of Scotland, (c1850). Portrait of King James I (1394-1437) who was King of the Scots from 1406-1437. For the first 18 years of his reign however he was a hostage of the English, who demanded a ransom be paid for his freedom. The Scots eventually paid the ransom and James returned to Scotland in 1424 and was crowned at Scone. Taken from the book Old England's Worthies, London, c1850.
