Wesley Merritt, Union Army general, 1862-1867. Merritt (1834-1910) was a noted cavalry commander during the Civil War. He later commanded the 9th Cavalry on the western frontier, served as Superintendent of the US Military Academy at West Point, and became military governor of the Philippines after the islands were captured by the Americans in the Spanish-American War.
