John Sedgwick, Union Army general, 1862-1867. The commander of the VI Corps of the Army of the Potomac, Sedgwick (1813-1864) was killed by a sniper at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia on 9 May 1864. He was the highest ranking Union general to be killed in action during the Civil War.
