Philip Henry Sheridan, Union general, 1862-1867. In the American Civil War Sheridan (1831-1888) rose to the rank of Major-general in the Union (northern) army, and commanded the Army of the Shenandoah Valley from 1864. In 1883 he was made commanding general of the US Army.
