First page of the original manuscript of Adam Bede by George Eliot (pseudonym of Mary Anne Evans), with a dedication in volume i to George Henry Lewes followed by a note stating that the work was begun on 22nd October 1857, and finished on 16th November 1858. Lewes lived with Eliot from 1854 until his death. Eliot addresses him as her husband and signs herself Marian Lewes, although they never married. From the fourth Series of Facsimiles of royal, historical, literary and other autographs in the Department of Manuscripts, British Museum: Series I-V. (London, 1899).
